If you have missing teeth, you are probably keenly aware of how inconvenient it can be. However, many people don’t know that it can actually have consequences on the mouth as well, such as allowing the remaining teeth to shift around and changing the jawline and potentially the facial structure. To prevent this from happening, and to restore function to the teeth, dentures are a great solution. These removable dental prosthetics are custom-made and can work almost as well as natural teeth.
If some natural teeth still remain, partial dentures can be made. A number of measurements will be taken of the mouth and jaws in order to create the dentures. A model will then be created of what the dentures will look like. This model can be tried on to check for the fit and adjustments can be made to it. The measurements and model will be sent to a dental laboratory where the dentures will be made. If any teeth were extracted, you will have to go through a period of not having teeth while waiting for the dentures to come in. Once they have been completed, you can try them on and your dentist can make any adjustments as needed.
Immediate dentures are another type of denture available. They are made before any teeth are extracted, so the patient can wear them immediately and skip any period of not having teeth. However, this type of denture is not as closely-measured as other dentures and will therefore need many adjustments to fit perfectly.
You’ll receive detailed instructions on how to use and care for your dentures. It’s important to remember to clean them daily and store them in clean water when they’re not being worn.
