According to the ADA, fluoride intake is often recommended for infants and children between the ages of six months and 16 years, during which time the teeth are developing. Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that helps to strengthen teeth enamel. It can be found in certain foods and public water sources, as well as in store-bought dental products, such as toothpaste and mouth rinses. At Hermosa Dental, we provide fluoride treatments to benefit your children’s oral health.
The fluoride treatment provided by your dentist office utilizes fluoride in a much stronger concentration than what is found in store-bought products. The treatment is fairly quick and simple. Fluoride is applied directly to the teeth in a varnish form and left to dry and absorb into the teeth. You’ll be advised not to eat, drink, or rinse for at least 30 minutes after treatment. Fluoride benefits the teeth by making them more resistant to the build-up of plaque and sugars. It can also speed up remineralization and disrupt acid erosion in teeth.
In addition to fluoride treatments, stronger mouth rinses can be prescribed as needed. Your dentist can advise you on your family’s fluoride needs.
