Sedation is sometimes needed for certain dental procedures. Other times, it can be used to help anxious patients to relax for a better experience.
Sedation dentistry sometimes uses medication and offers many benefits to meet a patient’s needs. It helps the body to relax fully, which increases the effectiveness of local anesthesia. It also reduces the sensation of passing time, which can help make complex or multiple treatments much easier to deal with. Finally, it prevents the muscles from stiffening or becoming sore during a lengthy procedure. Sedation is always closely monitored by experienced dental professionals to ensure that a patient is both comfortable and safe.
Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a mild form of dental sedation. This gas, once inhaled, produces a state of mild relaxation. The patient is still conscious, but very relaxed and experiences a reduced sensitivity to pain. Nitrous oxide is safe for patients of practically every age. At the end of the appointment, oxygen is flushed through the system to neutralize the effects of the “laughing gas,” causing the patient to return to full alertness. Patients can even drive themselves home after an appointment under nitrous oxide.
